In a major boost to tourism development, Bauchi State Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed has approved over N5 billion for critical projects aimed at revitalizing the Sumu Wildlife Park and Yankari Game Reserve.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Tourism, Alhaji Abdullahi Hassan Nasarawa, during an exclusive interview with Journalists for Tourism at his office in the Abubakar Umar Secretariat, Bauchi.
According to the Commissioner, the governor approved N2 billion for various projects at Sumu Wildlife Park located in Kafin Madaki Local Government Area. The projects include:
- Construction of a 13.5-kilometer road from Kafin Madaki to Sumu Wildlife Park, at a cost of N1,098,782,155.13.
- Construction of administrative blocks, costing N30,960,362.81.
- Building of a modern restaurant within the park, at a cost of N20,665,277.29.
Alhaji Nasarawa explained that these efforts aim to rejuvenate the once-neglected wildlife park, create employment opportunities for locals, and promote tourism in Bauchi State. He highlighted that plans are underway to introduce more animal species to the park to enhance its appeal to visitors.
“The Sumu Wildlife Park offers a unique opportunity for visitors to interact with friendly animals such as giraffes and zebras. With these upgrades and the introduction of new species, the park will become a more exciting and educational destination," he stated.
In a related development, Governor Mohammed has also approved N3 billion for major upgrades at the renowned Yankari Game Reserve.
The projects at Yankari include:
- Installation of a new solar power system, costing N2.7 billion.
- Total overhaul of the water scheme and renovation of luxury suites, costing N300 million.
Commissioner Nasarawa revealed that work has already commenced at the reserve, and the upgraded facilities will soon be commissioned by the governor.
He added that the investments are not only expected to attract both domestic and foreign tourists but also create between 500 to 1000 jobs for youths in surrounding communities.
“These initiatives are in line with Governor Bala Mohammed's 'My Bauchi Project' agenda to make Bauchi State one of the leading tourism destinations in Nigeria and across Africa," the Commissioner said.
The Bauchi State Government’s focus on boosting tourism is expected to significantly enhance revenue generation, preserve cultural heritage, and stimulate economic growth within the state.
