The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the Irrigate Nigeria Project in Udubo, Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, as part of efforts to transform agriculture through sustainable irrigation and modern farming techniques.
Speaking at the launch on Saturday,
Governor Bala Mohammed commended President Bola Tinubu for initiating the project through the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF). He described the initiative as a historic step toward achieving food security and economic empowerment for millions of Nigerians."This project is a testimony to President Tinubu’s leadership ingenuity and innovative spirit. Unlike previous agricultural funding models that were abused, this initiative is built on accountability, sustainability, and advanced technology," the governor stated.
Mohammed emphasized that if properly implemented, the Irrigate Nigeria Project will have a multiplier effect across the agricultural value chain by introducing modern irrigation systems, enhancing knowledge transfer, and creating wealth for communities. He noted that the initiative would serve as a model for other regions, ensuring that Nigeria transitions from reliance on rain-fed farming to year-round commercial agriculture.
The Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, explained that the goal of the project is to empower farmers with sustainable irrigation systems, enabling them to farm throughout the year. He highlighted key components, including:
- Deployment of centralized irrigation systems to form farming clusters
- Provision of farming inputs such as fertilizers and improved seeds
- Technical support and training for participating farmers
In his remarks, Dr. Zach Adedeji of RHIDF reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to ensuring food security and economic stability through strategic agricultural interventions. He thanked Governor Bala Mohammed for providing an enabling environment to support the project's implementation.
The Irrigate Nigeria Project is expected to boost productivity, reduce food imports, and create job opportunities in rural communities. With the right implementation strategy, it could revolutionize Nigeria’s agricultural sector and strengthen the country’s economy.
