By Abdulwahab Muhammad Bauchi
Bauchi, Nigeria – March 26, 2025 – The Bauchi State Government has officially launched its 2024-2028 Multisectoral Action Plan for Food and Nutrition, a strategic initiative aimed at addressing malnutrition and improving food security across the state.
The plan, unveiled by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Auwal Jatau, at the Government House in Bauchi, outlines nine priority areas and integrates multiple sectors, including agriculture, health, social protection, early child development, education, and water and sanitation. It aligns with the Zero Hunger Challenge (ZHC), which seeks to eliminate hunger and stunting among children under five.
Government’s Commitment to Ending Malnutrition
Speaking at the event, Auwal Jatau, who also serves as the Chairman of the State Nutrition Council (SNC), emphasized the government's determination to reduce hunger and malnutrition through a well-coordinated, multi-sectoral approach.
"The Bauchi State Government recognizes that malnutrition cannot be addressed by one sector alone. That is why we have developed nutrition-sensitive interventions across different areas, ensuring comprehensive solutions to this challenge," he stated.
He further revealed that the state has made adequate budgetary provisions for nutrition programs, including the Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), to support vulnerable populations.
Strengthened Collaboration and Accountability
The newly launched plan focuses on strengthening inter-sectoral collaboration, increasing financing, and establishing accountability mechanisms to achieve its ambitious goals.
"This costed plan serves as both a resource mobilization tool and an allocation guide for effective implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. The success of this initiative depends on the sustained commitment of government agencies, development partners, the private sector, and all stakeholders," the Deputy Governor added.
The Commissioner of Budget, Planning, and Multilateral Coordination, Amina Katagum, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Jibrin Yusuf, noted that the action plan was developed with support from development partners and aligns with national and global nutrition strategies.
Tackling Malnutrition in Bauchi State
Bauchi State has been grappling with high malnutrition rates, with 54.2% of children under five reportedly affected. The new plan is expected to provide a framework for intervention, ensuring that malnutrition is tackled at its root through policy action, increased funding, and effective implementation.
Development Partners and Stakeholder Support
The initiative has received backing from the Catalyzing Strengthened Policy Action for Healthy Diets and Resilience (CASCADE) project, which collaborates with government ministries and partners to improve nutrition outcomes.
With the unveiling of the 2024-2028 Multisectoral Action Plan for Food and Nutrition, stakeholders are optimistic that Bauchi State is on a clear path to achieving sustainable food security and better health outcomes for its citizens.
Next Steps
The focus now shifts to the implementation phase, where the government, development partners, and stakeholders will work together to ensure effective execution and measurable progress in improving the state's nutritional status.
