Bauchi Among Top Five in 2024 Subnational Audit Efficacy Index

From Abdulwahab Muhammad, Bauchi

Bauchi State has been recognized as one of the top five best-performing states in the 2024 Subnational Audit Efficacy (SAE) Index, an annual ranking by the Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI) that evaluates transparency, financial accountability, and audit effectiveness at the subnational level.

The SAE Index 2024 placed Osun, Bauchi, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, and Yobe among the top states demonstrating excellence in public financial management, with Yobe emerging as the overall best and receiving the SAE Index 2024 Championship Award.

Bauchi’s Commitment to Transparency and Accountability

Bauchi’s impressive ranking reflects its proactive approach to financial discipline and governance reforms, particularly in areas such as:

  • Timely submission and public disclosure of audit reports.
  • Effective implementation of audit recommendations to improve financial management.
  • Strengthening the independence of the Office of the Auditor-General.
  • Use of technology in auditing and financial reporting for enhanced accountability.

These efforts align with the state government’s commitment to ensuring fiscal responsibility, transparency, and prudent management of public resources.

Significance of the SAE Index Report

The SAE Index 2024, launched under the theme: “Strengthening Accountability Measures Through Technology for Resilient and Sustainable Subnational Development in Nigeria,” provides a comprehensive evaluation of how states manage public finances. It assesses key aspects of the public audit cycle, including the submission, review, and implementation of audit reports.

Bauchi’s Next Steps

As Bauchi celebrates this achievement, there is a need for sustained commitment to financial integrity and governance reforms. Key focus areas moving forward include:

  1. Strengthening internal financial monitoring mechanisms to prevent irregularities.
  2. Expanding digital tools in financial reporting and audit processes.
  3. Enhancing collaboration between government agencies and civil society organizations to promote accountability.
  4. Ensuring full implementation of audit recommendations to maintain transparency and efficiency.

Conclusion

Bauchi’s recognition in the SAE Index 2024 is a major milestone in its pursuit of good governance, transparency, and financial accountability. By continuing to adopt best practices and strengthening institutional reforms, the state is well-positioned to set an example for effective public financial management in Nigeria.
