"Shameful That Nigeria Can’t Feed Itself" – Gov. Bala Laments
From: Abdulwahab Muhammad, Bauchi
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed deep frustration over Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with food security, calling it a national embarrassment. Despite its vast land and resources, the country—home to over 250 million people—still finds it difficult to produce enough food for its citizens.
Speaking at the Government House in Bauchi, while hosting the Portuguese Ambassador to Nigeria, Paulo Martins Santos, Governor Bala didn’t mince words:
"It is shameful that a country as big as Nigeria, with this massive population, still cannot feed itself. If we can't achieve food security, then we are not on the path to prosperity!"
Bauchi’s Open Invitation to Investors
The governor highlighted Bauchi State’s four million hectares of fertile land, offering a golden opportunity for agricultural expansion. He assured potential investors, particularly from Portugal, that his government is eliminating bureaucratic bottlenecks, corruption, and excessive taxation to create a business-friendly environment.
"We are ready to welcome Portuguese investors to farm, export, create jobs, and contribute to economic growth—without unnecessary taxation or corruption," he assured.
Tapping into Bauchi’s Rich Resources
Beyond agriculture, Governor Bala spotlighted Bauchi’s untapped mineral wealth, listing gold, lead, tantalite, limestone, and more as potential goldmines for investment.
He also reminded the audience of Portugal’s historical ties with Nigeria, referencing its early explorers and influence.
"The Portuguese were the first to defy all odds, opening a dark tunnel in the 15th century to reach Lagos. Their relationship with King Jaja of Opobo is well documented."
Portugal’s Growing Footprint in Nigeria
In response, Ambassador Paulo Martins Santos expressed Portugal’s keen interest in strengthening ties with Nigeria beyond history.
"Portugal knows Nigeria well. We were the first Europeans to visit in 1472, and Lagos itself has a Portuguese name. But now, it’s time to update our partnership," the ambassador stated.
He also revealed that a Portuguese company is currently building a railway between Kano and Maradi in Niger Republic, signaling deeper involvement in Nigeria’s infrastructure.
Bauchi Investment Summit Incoming
Governor Bala wrapped up his address by announcing Bauchi State’s upcoming investment summit, inviting Portugal and other global investors to explore business opportunities across agriculture, tourism, healthcare, education, energy, commerce, and industry.
Will Nigeria finally turn its food crisis around with the help of foreign investments, or should it focus more on self-sufficiency? The debate continues.
