Bauchi governments, Senator Shehu Buba disagree over  Killing of one person two injured

There has been disagreement between the Bauchi State Government and the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District Shehu Buba Umar over the alleged killing of one person and injury of two others by quasi security outfit in Zaranda village of Toro Local Government area of the State.

State Government alleged that Senator Shehu Buba had alleged that the September 10, 2024 shooting, which killed a charcoal seller and left two others fatally injured, was allegedly led by a militia group led by one Shayi, describing the incident  as extra judicial killing when he paid a condolence visit to the victim’s family, condemning the shootings

In its reaction the State Government called on the security agencies to invite the senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District senator Shehu Buba to make clarification on his recent statement regarding security situation in the state, and condemned the statement of Chairman Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, Senator Shehu Buba (Bauchí South) on the recent  shooting in  his constituency of Zaranda in Toro Local Government Area of the state

Senator  assured the bereaved family  that he would go to any length to ensure that the deceased get justice to prevent further extra judicial killing in his constituency   

Speaking with journalists the senator assured the families of those attacked that the killers will not escape justice. Shedding more light on the account of the incident The senator said it all happened in Zaranda Gari community in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State with shooting that led to the death of a 35 year old resident Abubakar Yahaya, while two other residents, Husseini Yunusa,20, and Yayangida Husseini, 16, were fatally injured. Senator Buba, who hailed from Nabordo district where Zaranda Gari is located, visited the families of the deceased and the injured persons and sympathized with them over the incident. He expressed sadness , saying no individual or group of individuals has the right to take the laws into their hands. Senator Buba, described the incident as unfortunate and brutal, called on the police to thoroughly investigate the incident to ensure that those found guilty are prosecuted “The purpose of my visit? This is my Constituency , not only my Constituency, it’s my local government , not only my local government it is my district, not only my district, it's my ward. It is my home town,” he told journalists “I came purposely to visit my home town and as well to pay a condolence for the unfortunate tragedy that happened in the community in Zaranda as a result of a brutal killing . “Our young businessmen were on their lawful business when they were attacked by a group led by one militia led by somebody called Shayi. “I was told that they were on their lawful business of selling.of charcoal and in the course of that they were attacked in their own hometown. “They were shot with guns to death. I an assuring them that we will take every action on this matter is taken for justice to prevail” 

The statement of the senator, which went viral in a video, did not go down well with the state government who condemned it as irresponsible. The Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Abubakar Abdulhamid Bununu, said  the senator’s comments were undignifying of a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria . Bununu condemned a video statement made by Senator  Buba alleging that personnel of the State Agency for Vigilante and Youth Empowerment were responsible for the recent killing in Zaranda village.  “His claim is baseless, inflammatory, divisive, and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the state government and its security agencies,” . “The senator’s reckless allegations are unacceptable and have the potential to compromise the state’s security, undermine the efforts of law enforcement agencies, and create unnecessary tension among the citizens” The Commissioner said that the state government takes the security and well-being of its citizens seriously and will not tolerate any individual or group spreading false information or making baseless allegations that threaten the peace and stability of the state. “The Bauchi State Government is committed to ensuring justice and accountability for the Zaranda killing and has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident,”  Bununu stated. He urged the senator to retract his statement and tender an unreserved apology to the people of Bauchi State for his irresponsible and misleading comments. “The senator’s actions are a clear example of politicizing security issues, which is unacceptable and detrimental to the well-being of our citizens,” Abubakar Bununu stressed. The commissioner also called on security agencies to invite Senator Shehu Buba for clarification on his statement, stressing that as a public figure, he should be objective and responsible in his utterances. “The state government will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and stability in Bauchi State and will not be distracted by baseless allegations and misinformation,” Bununu said. . 

Separately, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Nigerian Security and Intelligence, Senator Shehu Buba¹ Umar, has condemned the recent attack in his constituency by a security outfit that left one dead and two others fatally injured

Police Public Relations Officer Ahmed Mohammed Wakil said that 

This incident led to the serious injury of Abubakar Yahaya (35 years old), Hussaini Yunusa (20 years old), and Yayangida Hussaini (16 years old), all from Zaranda Gari village via Toro LGA. They were promptly taken to the Primary HealthCare Center Zaranda Gari, where unfortunately, Abubakar Yahaya succumbed to his injuries, Wakili said the Commissioner of Police has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police In-charge of the Department of Operations to mobilize tactical teams, including the Department of Operation, Rapid Response Squad, Operation Restore Peace, Acpol Toro, and Nabordo Division personnel, to handle the situation professionally. He said that the Command has tasked a dedicated team of investigators to identify, investigate,and prosecute anyone responsible for the incident.

The shooting led to massive protest in Zaranda village causing a blockage of the highway road, police said, adding that there was sporadic firing by members of a quasi-security outfit.
